Everton are reportedly ready to sell Ashley Williams so should Brendan Rodgers consider a reunion with the defender at Celtic?

Celtic still have problems to be resolved in defence, despite the protestations of manager Brendan Rodgers to the contrary.

In January Rodgers hit back at criticism aimed at Nir Bitton, Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic, but clearly recognised leadership and experience was needed having added Marvin Compper to the ranks.

After just one appearance for the Hoops it is clear that Compper is not the man to fill that role at centre-back and while the rise of Kristoffer Ajer has been promising, a player who has been there and done it is still needed.

Who to target?

The Mirror reports that one of Rodgers’ former stars is among 12 players set to be offloaded by Everton this summer. That man is Ashley Williams.

Williams endured a difficult campaign at Goodison Park in 2017/18, but will have fond memories of working under Rodgers from their time spent together at Swansea City between 2010 and 2012.

While the Wales captain may now be a bit off the pace in the Premier League, there is potential for the 33-year-old to excel in the Scottish Premiership and provide some guidance and mentorship to the likes of Ajer, Simunovic and Jack Hendry.
