Everton are reportedly interested in signing Tammy Abraham this summer after his outstanding year out on loan.
Everton’s outstanding end to the season suggests that Marco Silva can focus on targeting a handful of marquee additions this summer rather than look to oversee a major overhaul of his squad at Goodison Park.
One marquee player the supporters would surely love to see arrive is a new striker. Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson are the two players to have reached double figures for league goals, so it would be no surprise if the Toffees had another go at trying to replace Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian scored 87 goals in 166 games for Everton following his move from Chelsea. It is not difficult to see why it has been difficult to fill the void that Lukaku left when he joined Manchester United in a deal that could ultimately cost the latter £90 million (via BBC Sport).
But perhaps, recent reports hint that Silva is targeting a move that would replicate the signing of Lukaku.
The Daily Mail reported this week that Everton are one of the teams that want Tammy Abraham this summer following his remarkable year with Aston Villa, that could still end with the Villans booking their return to the Premier League.
Abraham has scored 25 goals in 37 league games for Dean Smith’s men. He has nothing left to prove in the second tier, having previously been a major success at Bristol City. But there are question marks about his ability to play at the highest level, having struggled at Swansea City last term.
However, that could perhaps play into Everton’s hands if they hope to convince Chelsea into selling Abraham. It was a deal between the two clubs that led to Lukaku joining on loan before signing permanently one year later, and the Toffees may be hoping that history can repeat itself.
Abraham may have been poor at Swansea. But with the quality that Everton have behind the striker, a move to Goodison Park could be a masterstroke for his career.
And perhaps there is the slightest chance that he could follow in Lukaku’s footsteps by establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best goalscorers by swapping Stamford Bridge for a move to Merseyside.
