Manchester United are believed to be battling alongside Everton for Michael Keane.
According to the Telegraph, Manchester United are racing to sign Burnley defender Michael Keane alongside Everton.
The Toffees have had their eye on Keane for a prolonged period of time, and he is believed to be one of their top targets in the summer transfer window.
However, Everton could actually benefit from stepping down in their pursuit of Keane, and allowing the 24-year-old to join United.
Keane is currently valued at over £20 million by Burnley, which is a sizeable price tag for a defender with just two year’s experience of top flight football.
United are more than willing to match that valuation, and rather than compete, Everton may actually benefit from pulling out of what could be a protracted transfer saga.
If Keane arrives at United, the Telegraph claim that Chris Smalling could be moved on from Old Trafford – and he would arguably be a better addition for the Toffees.
Smalling is a Premier League winner, with a wealth of experience at club and international level, and as Everton look to push on to become a top four contender that knowhow could be vital.
Smalling remains an excellent centre-back, and would slot in well to Everton’s defence.
And, if United would be more than willing to sell him should Keane arrive, than Everton could actually benefit from missing out on one transfer target to land a different one.
