Could Everton appointing Sam Allardyce see Toffees reignite Christian Benteke interest?

Everton were linked with Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke in the summer, so could they make a fresh move in the near future?

According to a recent report from The Sun, Everton appear to be closing in on landing their new manager, with Sam Allardyce the man the Toffees want and the former England boss keen on taking over at Goodison Park.

Allardyce faces a tough job trying to get the best out of an Everton side that have struggled during the opening months of the season and only went into the international break outside of the relegation zone after winning their most recent game.

January could be a crucial window for Allardyce, if he does end up getting the job, so would it be out of the question to suggest that appointing the 63-year-old could see the Toffees reignite their interest in a striker they wanted in the summer and who Allardyce managed for much of last season?

Sky Sports reported in July that Everton wanted Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke as Ronald Koeman tried to make up for the loss of Romelu Lukaku.

Of course, Koeman would not sign Benteke and would not add much depth to his striker options. And that surely means that whoever replaces the Dutchman simply has to sign a new striker in January.

Benteke – who cost Palace £27 million (via Sky Sports) – scored nine times following Allardyce’s appointment last year, so the Englishman would be forgiven for including the former Liverpool man in his thoughts as he considers potential striker targets.

Whether Benteke is the right target for Everton is certainly up for debate – he has not scored a single goal this season – but it surely seems possible that Allardyce will consider the prospect of trying to bring him in if he is appointed.

But, of course, trying to get Palace to sell to what currently is a relegation rival will be a huge task if they do make a fresh move.
