The Aston Villa right-back has lost his starting spot but he could still be useful.
Aston Villa right-back Ahmed Elmohamady must have feared the worst when he saw Alan Hutton tearing it up on the opposite flank while covering for the suspended Neil Taylor, and he was right to with the Scotland international reverting to his more natural position once his Welsh teammate returned.
Since Hutton’s resurgence on the right, Elmohamady has had to make do with a bit-part role at Villa, managing four brief substitute appearance and facing up to a prolonged spell out of the starting XI.
That said, a player who has always been a favourite of Villa boss Steve Bruce could be utilised further forward, tasked not with keeping the ball out at one end but putting it in at the other.
While Robert Snodgrass and Albert Adomah have impressed on the wings this season, the two players cannot expect to perform consistently from now until May, leaving a potential chance for Elmohamady to return to his roots and play as an out-and-out winger.
The Egyptian international knows how to score and create and that could come in very useful as Villa look to seal a promotion place come May.
He may have fallen out of favour for now but, as Hutton proved, that does not need to be the end of the season, with a chance in an alternative position all you need to prove your worth.
