Could Edin Dzeko become Manchester City’s top goalscorer this season?

After a goalscoring start to the season for club and country the 26-year-old front man may be able to finally produce the goals on a regular and frequent basis for Manchester City this term.

Edin Dzeko seemed destined for the summer exit at Manchester City this summer after spending huge chunks of last season’s latter stages on the fringes of the first team picture with competition fierce from Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli and the returning Carlos Tevez. However Manchester City were ultimately unsuccessful in their pursuits of Robin Van Persie and Stevan Jovetic so selling the Bosnian became an increasingly unlikely option.

It seems a long way away now but Edin Dzeko was the hottest property in Europe little over 18 months ago when Manchester City won the race for the prolific striker in a £27 million deal from Wolfsburg. His record spoke for itself after an impressive 76 goals in 109 goals in his final three seasons in the Bundesliga.

Last season started well, very well in fact as Dzeko bagged a four goal salvo against Tottenham on his way to becoming Premier League Player of the Month for August but tailed off as the season progressed, despite scoring a total of 19 goals, last year would not have been deemed a total success.

But after playing a vital role in that memorable 3-2 title winning game against QPR he has started this season exceptionally well scoring 2 goals in his opening 3 Premier League fixtures.

At international level however the results have been even more astonishing after smashing home 5 goals in 4 games since the start of June. Albeit against a mixed quality of opposition in the form of Liechtenstein, Latvia and Mexico it is still something not to be shirked at as he overtook former Fenerbahce striker Elvir Bolic as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s all-time leading goalscorer.

I have been to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the past taking in the beautiful city of Mostar and trust me when I tell you he is highly revered in his homeland (although when I went most folks thought he would be on his way to Chelsea rather than Manchester City).

His goal against Latvia was particularly eye-catching after he dumped several defenders on the ground before sliding the ball home with arrogant ease….

So is this just another good start for Edin Dzeko or have the teething problems now dissipated leaving him to sink his gnashers into Premier League and Champions League opposition this term?

In his first season at Wolfsburg he mustered a seemingly measly 9 goals before smashing home 36 the following season and 29 the year after so Manchester City may in the end be proven thankful nobody provided them with an irrefusable offer for the Sarajevo-born star, who could prove a lot of critics wrong with a goal laden season this term.

What do you think of Dzeko, can he fire in the goals at Man City this season?
