Dwight Gayle has struggled to hit it off at Newcastle United in the Premier League, as he was sent out on loan to the Championship last season where he thrived at West Bromwich Albion.

It simply hasn’t worked out for Newcastle United and Dwight Gayle in the Premier League, but could his role for the club now become extremely important following the recent chaos in the North East.

As all will be well aware, Rafa Benitez’s contract at St James’ Park will finally be up by midnight on Sunday, and with his departure, it has to be asked, who will be dealing with the transfers at the club?

At this moment in time, there is no manager in place, and with pre-season around the corner, Newcastle need more fresh legs and more firepower added to their squad.

Gayle has struggled to find the back of the net in England’s top-flight, but with his current club in absolute chaos, could the 28-year-old now play an unexpected yet important role on Tyneside next season?

It is fair to say that Gayle has been a flop for Newcastle in the Premier League, scoring 21 goals in 99 games for various clubs [transfermarkt], yet he has thrived in the second tier by scoring 59 goals in 100 matches [transfermarkt].

If Benitez was still here, it wouldn’t have been a surprise to see Gayle depart once again and the much-loved Salomon Rondon walk through the doors – but with the Spaniard gone, the chances of that happening are pretty slim.

Therefore, the senior players within the team are going to play a huge part next season, and someone like Gayle could be their best forward option if Mike Ashley continues in his incompetent ways.

If that is the case then he will be paramount in Newcastle ensuring they don’t get off to a poor start next season or even slump into the bottom three within the first few games.

Whilst Gayle has struggled for goals in the Premier League, he is coming off the back of a fantastic loan spell at West Brom, who finished in the playoffs last term.

That will give him some confidence going into the new season, and with the Magpies’ current mess, they are going to need every help they are going to get and that includes Gayle’s threat up front.
