Everton coach has a big history with Glasgow Rangers and managerial ambitions.
Rangers are looking for a manager after announcing the exit of Mark Warburton over the weekend.
Big names like former boss Alex McLeish have already been linked, with Billy Davies and Derek McInnes also among the favourites with SkyBet.
One controversial name who does not yet figure but could potentially emerge as a candidate if not now then in the future is former Gers striker Duncan Ferguson.
Duncan Ferguson stars for Rangers
The powerful former forward has long retired from his playing career, and has since been working as a coach at Everton.
The 45-year-old began working for free for the club to get his foot in the door in 2011, and is a valued member of their backroom staff, having worked under David Moyes, Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman.
He has twice been tipped to become a manager in his own right by ex-Toffees bosses, with Howard Kendall telling The BBC in 2013 that he wanted him to replace David Moyes: “He is the type of character who could handle the pressure. He would have a presence and it really could work with someone perhaps a little bit older alongside him.”
Martinez promoted Ferguson to the level of first team coach in 2014, and told The Times: “Duncan wants to be as good as he can be and I think he’s going to have an incredible future.”
Everton coach Duncan Ferguson
Ferguson remains highly valued at Everton, where he spent the latter part of his playing career, but if there is one job which could tempt him away from Goodison Park, then surely it is a return to Glasgow Rangers.
The striker had his fair share of controversy during his time at Rangers, but he also understands the club, the passion of the fans, and has six years of coaching experience behind him.
It may take a leap of faith from Rangers to make him an offer, but Ferguson could be a far more inspiring appointment than a number of names currently doing the rounds, and the fact Everton would be disappointed to see him go would speak volumes for what an coup his appointment would be.
