Derek McInnes has been linked with the Glasgow Rangers job, so would he be interested in the Ibrox post?

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers have identified Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes as their number one target to succeed Pedro Caixinha, and are willing to pay the £1.5 million compensation fee that it would take to get a deal done.

Though McInnes is a former Rangers player and would have the chance to lead them back to the level they previously were at if he took the job, he would certainly be forgiven for rejecting the Gers if they give him a decision to make.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He has done a wonderful job with Aberdeen, while Rangers continue to struggle to join the pace-setters in the Scottish Premiership, and McInnes may question whether returning to Ibrox is the best decision for him.

But perhaps his comments in the wake of the Dons’ defeat to Celtic last week just hint that an approach from Rangers would appeal to the 46-year-old.

Aberdeen were beaten 3-0 despite going into the game level on points with the Hoops at the top of the table, and afterwards, McInnes – as reported by BBC Sport – admitted that there was little that could have been done to prevent Brendan Rodgers’ side from coming out on top.

“Even though we’re trying to be competitive with them and will continue to try to be competitive, the gulf is huge in terms of what they can do and bring to the club,” he said, as reported by BBC Sport.

“Our fight, as much as we want it to be with Celtic, is with the rest of the teams and we’ll be ready to go again on Saturday,” he went on to add.

Although Aberdeen are some way ahead of Rangers at the moment, the defeat may have perhaps left some feeling that the club have reached their ceiling domestically, and perhaps McInnes may have similar feelings.

Rangers, on the other hand, surely have the potential to put everything in place to possibly challenge Celtic at some stage. So perhaps it may not be out of the question to suggest that McInnes may look at a move to Ibrox as one that may see him take a step backwards initially but has the potential to allow him to ascend to a level that Aberdeen perhaps cannot reach right now – as the defeat to Celtic somewhat highlighted.
