It is fair to say that things have not gone according to plan for Newcastle United’s surprise summer signing Daryl Murphy thus far.
After all, the Republic of Ireland international would have been hoping to fill his boost at St. James’ Park but has instead had to settle for a place on the periphery after overcoming injury problems earlier in the campaign.
Goals against Brentford and Rotherham United appeared to have signalled a change in fortune for Murphy, but since then he has barely featured and that is even more baffling when you consider the need for goal-scorers in the absence of Dwight Gayle.
Aleksandar Mitrovic is struggling to replicate his best form and with a top of the table clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on the horizon it would be a surprise if Murphy started despite the calls from the terraces.
However Tuesday’s match could offer the perfect chance for Murphy to redefine his first season at Newcastle with a single kick of his foot.
The match against the Seagulls is vital for Newcastle’s title hopes and whether Murphy starts or, more likely, comes off the bench, if he scores the winning goal his manager Rafa Benitez will struggle to overlook him from here on.
