West Ham United and Chelsea are reportedly battling it out for the signature of highly-rated midfielder Jean Michael Seri.

According to a recent report from The Sun, West Ham and Chelsea are currently battling it out to sign Nice’s £35 million-rated midfielder Jean Michael Seri as he continues to impress for the Ligue 1 side.

Signing Seri would arguably be one of the most superb deals that the Hammers could get done this summer after a campaign where their midfield often seemed to lack steel and looked vulnerable. Unfortunately, another report has suggested that Chelsea are extremely determined to sign the Ivory Coast international.

The Daily Mirror has suggested this week that the Blues are big fans of the 26-year-old, and are looking at him as a potential replacement for Danny Drinkwater, who they are ready to sell just one year after his £30 million switch to Stamford Bridge.

It would be little surprise if Manuel Pellegrini had Seri right near the very top of his list of potential targets this summer, but perhaps losing out to Chelsea in the Seri chase does not necessarily have to leave the Hammers empty-handed.

The Telegraph reported in May that the Irons had their eye on Drinkwater. So while losing Seri to Chelsea would be a major blow for Pellegrini’s men, there is perhaps a silver lining in that it should make the move for Drinkwater much easier – and perhaps West Ham will be able to negotiate a much better deal than they would now while the Englishman’s place in the pecking order has not changed.

Signing Seri should be Pellegrini’s priority. He is a quality player and landing him would be a fantastic statement of intent from the Irons. But if Chelsea are set to win the race, perhaps West Ham can take one minor positive from the fact that it should free up a move for another of their reported targets.
