Spurs only signed Fernando Llorente on transfer deadline day – but they are already looking to bring in Besiktas’ Cenk Tosun too.
It seems there is a reasonable chance that Cenk Tosun could be a Tottenham Hotspur player by the end of January.
The Sun reported that Spurs, as well as Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, all sent scouts to watch the Turkish striker score twice against Finland over the international break. And the president of Tosun’s club side, Besiktas, has confirmed via HaberTurk that the Super Lig champions ‘will sell’ in January if an acceptable offer comes their way for a striker valued at around £17 million.
Tosun, in theory, would arrive in North London as a back-up to Harry Kane. But, when Spurs spent £12 million on Fernando Llorente in the summer, per The Independent, it appeared that they had already filled that position.
If Spurs do manage to swat off competition and land a striker who scored 41 goals in the last two seasons, this may leave Llorente in the limbo at worst and battling with the Turkey star for minutes at best.
Tottenham dramatically beat London rivals Chelsea to the signature of the former Juventus frontman, who kept the South Welsh club in the Premier League last season with 15 goals in 28 starts.
Llorente hasn’t exactly hit the ground running at Spurs, however, featuring in just 17 minutes of top flight football spread out across two cameo substitute appearances. Already, questions are starting to form over how a striker who relies on crosses and dead balls will fit into a Tottenham side renowned for their pace, movement and interplay off the front.
Tosun, a far more athletic and mobile striker, seems a more natural fit on paper. Therefore, after just a few months at Tottenham, there’s a genuine possibility that Llorente could find himself falling to third choice in the pecking order.
