Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier is reportedly attracting attention ahead of the January transfer window.

At this stage, it appears that one of Steven Gerrard’s biggest tasks during the January transfer window will be keeping James Tavernier at Rangers.

Tavernier is the captain and recently signed a new contract at Ibrox. But there is reportedly plenty of interest in him, with the Daily Mail reporting that Brighton are eyeing a move while the Daily Record suggested that West Brom had also scouted the right-back.

It would be a big blow for the Gers to lose Tavernier. His form has not always left the fans happy, but he is proving to be a fantastic leader for Gerrard’s men and will be considered by many to be the best right-back in the Scottish Premiership.

Meanwhile, at Celtic, it appears that Brendan Rodgers is hoping to strengthen his options in that area of the pitch. The Daily Express reported last week that the Hoops were eyeing a pre-contract deal for Connor Roberts as he heads into the final months of his current terms with Swansea City.

If he wanted to make the switch to Parkhead in the summer, he could get an agreement in place when the winter window happens. And if that proves to be the case, then perhaps Rangers need to be wary of Swansea’s next move.

The Mail reported last month that the Swans were one of the teams that wanted to sign Tavernier in the summer. Of course, they would miss out, but perhaps they may be tempted to get back involved in the race in January if Roberts does end up leaving.

So could Rodgers potentially landing one of his key targets make Gerrard’s January just that little bit more difficult to get through?
