‘We want Carlos out’ sang a substantial amount of the travelling Sheffield Wednesday support as they watched their team lose 2-1 to bottom-placed Bolton Wanderers in the Championship.

It is a result that leaves the Owls 12th in the table and after four defeats in their opening 12 league matches, under-fire manager Carlos Carvalhal says he understands the fans’ frustration.

“The fans are unhappy and they have reasons to be unhappy. I agree with them because I am unhappy,” Carvalhal told the Sheffield Star.

“But we are not far from the first positions. It is a very hard competition and all teams are losing points. We still believe we can achieve promotion this season.”

The pressure is starting to mount on Carvalhal, who has come so close to taking Wednesday back into the Premier League during his first two seasons at the club, losing in the playoffs on each occasion.

Yet even at this early stage of the new campaign the South Yorkshire side are already off the pace of the top six and many believe the Portuguese may have run his course at Hillsborough.

With a lot of the supporters having turned, this could mean that a loss at Derby County this Saturday (October 21) may spell the end of the 51-year-old’s time at the club.

It won’t be an easy task to get something against the Rams, either, who despite having their own issues in 2017/18 will be buoyed by their 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the East Midlands derby last time out.
