One of Flint’s old bosses is now on the staff at Burnley.
Is it only a matter of time before Burnley show interest in Aden Flint – the defender who was subject to a failed bid from Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, after his exploits for Bristol City this season?
Although not urgent, Burnley’s lack of options in Flint’s position may soon need addressing. Ben Mee and James Tarkowski have occupied the two centre-back slots for most of the campaign, with Kevin Long – a player with more experience in England’s fourth tier than in any other division – occasionally filling in for the pair.
Michael Keane has yet to be replaced – externally, at least – following his £25 million move to Everton last July, while a fourth option is certainly required if Burnley are to add continental fixtures to next season’s schedule.
With Mee and Tarkowski said to have gained admirers of their own in recent months, it is not entirely out of the question, either, that Sean Dyche could be robbed of another key defender this summer.
And given that Flint was managed by Dyche’s long-term ally – and Turf Moor employee – Nicky Law at Alfreton Town, it would come as little surprise were Burnley to move for the 28-year-old.
Doing it now would ensure that Flint – who has no experience whatsoever of Premier League football – is fully bedded in for next season. Not that he needs much practice – as this campaign’s showings against Watford, Stoke, Crystal Palace and both Manchester clubs suggest.
