Bristol City look set to sign a central midfielder, which may alert Leeds United and Newcastle United.

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Leeds and Newcastle are amongst the host of sides chasing Bristol City central midfielder Josh Brownhill, whose contract situation at Ashton Gate is leaving his future somewhat up in the air.

TEAMtalk reports that Brownhill’s contract expires this coming summer, and while the Robins have the option to extend that deal by a further year, it would arguably be a surprise if City were not making contingency plans in case they cannot convince the 21-year-old to sign a new deal.

And it appears that they may well be making possible plans to boost their options in the middle of the park. A recent report from The Sun has suggested that Everton’s Liam Walsh is looking set to join Lee Johnson’s side during the January transfer window for around £1 million – and that deal may perhaps alert the likes of Leeds and Newcastle.

With City in a fantastic position in the Championship, it certainly makes sense to try and strengthen their options to give them the best chance of capitalising on their current spot in the table.

And with Brownhill being excellent all season thus far, it seems unlikely that Johnson will be anymore willing to sell the former Barnsley man even if he does manage to get a deal for Walsh across the line.

But perhaps if Brownhill does want to leave – though there is no reason to believe that that is actually the case – and Leeds or Newcastle, or any other team having a look at the youngster make a bid that looks extremely appealing, the fact that City have signed Walsh may tempt the Robins to be slightly, yet still reluctantly, more open to the idea of letting him leave at some stage in the future.
