After an excellent start for Brighton this season could Lewis Dunk be exactly the sort of defender that Everton need?

Newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion are up to eighth in the Premier League table after beating Swansea City 1-0 for their fourth win in 11 outings.

It was also the Seagulls’ fourth clean-sheet of the season with only 11 goals conceded – only the top four, Burnley and Newcastle United have let in fewer.

This is testament to manager Chris Hughton and also the faith he has placed in the players that helped earn him promotion from the Championship last term.

Against the Swans the back four were all defenders who were at the Amex Stadium when the club was in the second tier of English football and centre-back Lewis Dunk in particular has greatly impressed.

Dunk is yet to miss a minute of league football in 2017/18 and has shown he is not out of place in the top flight, which almost certainly has not gone unnoticed elsewhere in the division.

One club who could really use someone of the 25-year-old’s ability is Everton, who sanctioned £144.9m (Telegraph) to be spent on new players over the summer but still have a shaky defence.

Michael Keane arrived from Burnley and is considered an exciting talent despite a slow start, but Ashley Williams has been in poor form and is now 33-years-old, while captain Phil Jagielka is even more senior and will be 36 next birthday.

Dunk is still relatively young and his development is in an upward trajectory, unlike Williams and Jagielka, and therefore could be just the man to aid a backline that has already conceded 22 league goals this campaign.
