Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in bringing Graeme Shinnie to Ibrox.
The Evening Times has reported that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is interested in signing Graeme Shinnie when he becomes available on a free transfer in the summer.
Shinnie has arguably established himself as one of the better central midfielders in the Scottish Premiership, and his leadership could potentially make him an excellent signing for the Gers – particularly on a free transfer.
But it is also his versatility that could make him a fantastic addition. And that is the reason why Borna Barisic should perhaps be as concerned as any of the midfielders within the Rangers squad about the prospect of Shinnie moving to Ibrox.
Barisic has endured a difficult first season with the Gers. At times, the £2.2 million signing (fee reported by BBC Sport) has looked superb, but his form has dipped and it has been a while since the Rangers supporters have seen the left-back at his best.
The money spent on the Croatian suggests that Gerrard will give him plenty of time to prove that he can win his doubters over. But given that Shinnie is an accomplished left-back, Barisic may feel that he could be under a little more pressure to show his best form.
Rangers have a long list of central midfielders already. Shinnie would arguably move above a number of those players in the pecking order if he joined, but his ability to play at left-back may not be overlooked as Gerrard looks to get all of his top players into the team.
And if Barisic cannot rediscover his best form before the campaign concludes, perhaps he should keep one eye on what decision Shinnie makes as a move to Ibrox could leave his position in some doubt.
