The Liverpool player looks set to leave in the close season and Newcastle United’s manager knows him well.
While Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is currently focused on guiding his side back to the Premier League, he will already have half an eye on the players he could sign if – as expected – they return to the top flight in May.
There is no doubt Newcastle have one of the strongest squads ever assembled in the second tier, but it is unlikely to be enough to ensure a comfortable campaign back among the big boys, meaning the right additions will be crucial this summer.
While Newcastle are expected to spend plenty of money, there are also some savvy additions to be had in terms of free agents, and one Benitez knows very well would do a fine job at St. James’ Park.
The Spaniard brought Lucas Leiva to Liverpool back in 2007 and 334 appearances later the Brazilian appears to be coming to the end of his time at Anfield.
With his current contract expiring this summer, and no sign of an extension, Lucas should have plenty of suitors but Benitez could offer him the perfect chance to remain in England for a few more years.
Still only 30, the Brazilian would add much needed experience to Newcastle’s midfield and ensure additional cover in defence when required.
In short, signing Lucas would be a win-win, but only time will tell if Benitez plans on signing him for a second time.
