Tottenham Hotspur have handed a new deal to Ben Davies.

Tottenham Hotspur announced two deals today, confirming that defender Ben Davies and midfielder Harry Winks have signed new five-year deals with the club.

The Winks agreement has gone down well, with many expecting him to be a key part of the Spurs side moving forward, but the Davies deal has raised some eyebrows.

Davies, 26, started 20 Premier League games last season as he mostly split time with Danny Rose, but Spurs fans were often left frustrated with his performances.

Some will have even been hoping for Davies to go this summer, but instead, the Welshman has signed a new deal, in a move which may be won’t be the most popular.

Rose is more likely to leave, and whilst this is all disappointing for some Spurs fans, Pochettino may yet have a plan up his sleeve regarding Davies and his future at Tottenham.

Tottenham are yet to bring in a real heir for Jan Vertonghen, as a left-footed defender who can play at centre back or left back, and Davies actually fits that bill.

The former Swansea man lacking real pace has damaged Tottenham, as he doesn’t quite have the pace to be an attacking force like Rose was, particularly in the 2016-17 season.

He’s played as a centre back for Wales and fleetingly for Spurs, but it’s one way for Pochettino to give himself a versatile, ball-playing defender who can possibly fill in for Vertonghen one day, rather than him being the future at left back for Spurs.
