Former Empoli stopper Samir Ujkani has shared how he was told that Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is a ‘phenomenon’.
Tottenham Hotspur may well have struck gold having seen goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario impress this season.
Hugo Lloris had been Tottenham’s first-choice stopper for more than 10 years but his time effectively came to an end this summer.
Spurs decided to prioritise the signing of a new goalkeeper, paying around £17million to land Vicario from Empoli.
Lloris remains at the club but isn’t in the plans, leaving Vicario to go forward as Tottenham’s new long-term number one.
Samir Ujkani shares Guglielmo Vicario hype
Vicario wasn’t a big name before his move to Spurs but had impressed in Serie A last season.
Proving himself in the Premier League was a big task for Vicario but, so far, he has seriously impressed for Tottenham.
Vicario has seemingly been highly rated in Italy for a while now with Samir Ujkani sharing what he was told about the Spurs stopper.
The Kosovo international served as Vicario’s backup at Empoli and had been tipped off about Vicario by goalkeeping coach Vincenzo Sicignano.
Ujkani has told Tuttomercatoweb that Sicignano believed Vicario could become a ‘phenomenon’, and he now believes that the right decision was made with a move to Spurs.
“When I made the choice to go to Empoli, Sicignano was there and he warned me that Vicario could become a phenomenon,” said Ujkani. “Guglielmo has grown a lot, we are all proud of him. Italy has the goalkeeper of the future. For me he could go anywhere; whoever took him would have hit bingo. But the right choice was certainly to go to Tottenham,” he added.

Vicario proving doubters wrong
Everybody loves to be proven right but I have to be fair here – I suggested that Arsenal had got the better deal by signing David Raya whilst Spurs moved for Vicario.
Right now, that looks to be entirely wrong as Raya struggles for Arsenal and Vicario shines for Tottenham.
Vicario looked shaky at Brentford on the opening weekend of the season but has been excellent since then, proving to be a quality shot-stopper.
Tottenham fans will hope that Vicario can keep this kind of form going throughout the season and, ultimately, his entire stay in North London.
It’s clear that Vicario is highly rated in Italy, and we are now starting to see why with his impressive start to life in England.
