‘Could be six games’ Paul Merson delivers no-nonsense verdict on David Moyes appointment

West Ham United fans were outraged by the appointment of David Moyes as Slaven Bilic’s replacement this week.

West Ham called time on Slaven Bilic‘s tenure as manager on Monday after the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool last time out.

With just two wins from the first 11 games the Hammers find themselves in the relegation zone.

News that David Moyes has replaced Bilic on a six month contract (Sky Sports) has not gone down well with supporters, many of whom have turned on the board as a result.

Fans were promised the earth on leaving Upton Park for the London Stadium but have seen David Sullivan and David Gold spend just £4million net since the move.

And the Hammers faithful feel that lack of ambition is evident in the choice of new manager with many hoping for a high profile name or up-and-coming manager to get the job.

And the apathy towards Moyes is not just coming from supporters.

Pundit Paul Merson told Sky Sports’ The Debate the appointment of Moyes could be even more short-term than agreed.

“You’re looking at them fixtures, you wouldn’t be surprised if they’e still in the bottom three come what Christmas,” Merson told The Debate.

“Then you’re virtually halfway through the season so there’s a lot of trouble at West Ham at the moment and some of the games they’e losing they’re getting well beat as well.

“The six months (contract) tells you everything of where David Moyes is in his career at the moment as a manager and you’re talking what four years ago he was the manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“He’s got it all to prove. But six months could be six games looking at those fixtures.”
