Writing in his column for The Athletic, Mauricio Pochettino has been discussing Kylian Mbappe and the idea of the Frenchman playing alongside Harry Kane.

France face England on Saturday in the World Cup, and it’s fair to say that Kane and Mbappe are the centre of attention for their respective sides.

Pochettino, of course, knows Kane and Mbappe well from his time at Tottenham and PSG respectively, and he couldn’t help but ponder the idea of these two attackers playing together.

Pochettino is of the opinion that Mbappe could be brilliant alongside Kane, stating that the pair could strike up a partnership similar to the one Kane currently has with Heung-Min Son.

Kane and Mbappe partnership

Pochettino discussed the idea of these two playing together.

“This is something that unites Harry and Kylian. They really love the game,” Pochettino wrote

“Sometimes, big players love playing football but they don’t love the game itself. But these two genuinely love the game itself. They love to talk about football, they love to talk about tactics, they have brains that really understand football.

“And this is why I think it would be so good to see them playing together. They would be completely compatible. It could be similar to the bond that Harry has with Son Heung-min at Spurs. The connection would be amazing and the two could share ideas about tactics and movements.”

Not likely

The sad reality is that this hypothetical partnership will probably never share a pitch together.

Tottenham are never going to sign Kylian Mbappe, and while they may end up eventually selling Kane, the chances of him ending up at the same club as the Frenchman are miniscule.

Mbappe is likely to end up at Real Madrid at one point, and with Los Blancos seemingly building their future attack around the likes of Vinicius Jr and Endrick, it’s hard to imagine Kane making that switch.

Kane and Mbappe playing together would be mouth-watering, but it’ll probably never happen.
