Former Premier League winger Trevor Sinclair thinks Roberto Firmino is on borrowed time at Liverpool following Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Erik ten Hag’s revitalised Manchester United, speaking to talkSPORT (23 August, 10.50am).
Nothing lasts forever.
But how Jurgen Klopp would have wished he could roll back the years as Liverpool plodded their way to a first Old Trafford defeat in four years; all that possession, so little productivity.
Sadio Mane’s dynamism and unpredictability has been badly missed during the Reds’ worst start to a season since 2012/13, while Firmino looks a shadow of the player who bamboozled many a top-flight defence a couple of seasons ago.
In truth, the long-serving Brazilian probably wouldn’t have started away to an inspired United side if Klopp could have called upon Diogo Jota or the suspended Darwin Nunez; especially after an anonymous display at Fulham on opening weekend.
And Sinclair wonders if the writing is on the wall now for a man who will be out of contract in just 11 months’ time.
Is Roberto Firmino leaving Liverpool in 2023?
“I think Firmino could be leaving the football club,” says the former England international. “Nunez is their star striker (these days). But he’s put himself out the picture.
“I think Liverpool are in a bad way. I don’t think they’ll be competing unless they get some signings in, especially in midfield.”
Mo Salah, then, may soon be the only member of Liverpool’s legendary front three still wearing red. And even he was on the periphery at Old Trafford, restricted to a spectator’s role by the all-action Tyrell Malacia until popping up to half the deficit with a poacher’s finish late on.
“Going forward, Malacia did really well against Mo Salah. He still got his goal but is he affecting the game? I think the biggest thing last night was they missed Mane, his intensity, his bravery. (Luiz) Diaz couldn’t affect the game,” Sinclair adds, before switching his aim towards Klopp’s disjointed backline.
I don’t see Trent (Alexander-Arnold) improving in his defending. I think Klopp could have done more work with Trent on the right-hand side. (Andrew) Robertson looks off it, he doesn’t look his usual self this season. (Losing Joel) Matip is a huge blow. That might be an area where Liverpool might look to strengthen.
“As much of a fan as I am of Joe Gomez, I think he plays better at right-back or when he’s not playing with Virgil van Dijk. I think that partnership doesn’t work.”
