West Ham United haven’t won a major trophy since their FA Cup success in 1980.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Paul Merson predicted that West Ham could be dark horses for the FA Cup this season, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports.

The Hammers currently sit in 11th spot in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of sixth placed Manchester United and 12 point clear of the drop zone.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men have enjoyed a fine December, winning five of their seven Premier League games, and because of that run, they are looking upwards rather than behind them.

West Ham have drawn a home tie against Birmingham City in the third round of the FA Cup, and Pellegrini will surely be targeting success in that competition, considering his side’s comfortable position in the league.

That’s Paul Merson’s view, anyway.

The Arsenal legend told Sky Sports how the Hammers could be outsiders for the word’s oldest, most prestigious domestic trophy:

“West Ham could be dark horses for the FA Cup. They’re not getting relegated, they’re not going to get in the top six, and it’s a prime reason for them to have a go.”

West Ham face Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League tomorrow night, and a win against the Seagulls would set Pellegrini’s men up perfectly for their FA Cup third round clash with Birmingham at the weekend.

Whether the Hammers have what it takes to go all the way in the competition, however, remains to be seen.
