Speaking on Sky Sports News (1/9/22 11:15 AM), Tim Thornton has delivered an update on Leeds United’s Deadline Day plans.
The Whites are looking for a new attacker, and according to Thornton, they’ve now moved on from their interest in Cody Gakpo.
Instead, the Yorkshire club are now targeting a move for 22-year-old Marseille forward Bamba Dieng who Thornton says could arrive at Elland Road today.
What’s been said?
Thornton gave an update on Dieng.
“Developments here at Elland Road this morning. Leeds have been pursuing Cody Gakpo for a while, Victor Orta flew out to the Netherlands but that deal didn’t happen and he returned without the player.
“But Leeds are still active and the news I have for you this morning is that they are interested in doing a deal for Marseille forward Bamba Dieng. He’s a player they’ve been tracking for a while, so he’s now very much on the radar for Leeds. They’ve moved on and he could be arriving at Elland Road today.”
Ticks the boxes
Dieng could be just what the doctor ordered at Leeds United.
The Senegalese attacker can play anywhere across the front line. He’s been utilised on both wings and as a number nine in the past, and that’s exactly what Leeds need right now.
As the interest in Hwang Hee-Chan and Gakpo has shown, Leeds want a versatile forward through the door and Dieng would fit that bill perfectly.
The 22-year-old has bags of potential, with Graeme Bailey recently stating that he has a Sadio Mane-type ceiling, and given the project Leeds are building, this could be one we look back on as being a Deadline Day masterstroke in years to come.
