Speaking on the Newcastle Fans TV YouTube Channel, Fabrizio Romano has shared what he knows about Newcastle’s hunt for a new centre-half.

The Magpies haven’t found it easy to sign a new centre-back so far this January.

The Tyneside club have tried to move for the likes of Sven Botman, Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile, but, for differing reasons, all three moves now seem unlikely.

While Newcastle’s first three targets may be unattainable, Romano says that the club are still scouring the market, stating that they could now go for a player who wasn’t on their list a few days ago who could be a surprise signing.

What’s been said?

Romano shared what he knows about Newcastle’s hunt for a new defender.

“For Newcastle, it’s complicated to have bids accepted, and it’s the same for Diego Carlos. For Sevilla, he’s a very important player and they also have Kounde who is expected to leave the club in summer, if not in January. Signing a centre-back is not easy, but maybe they will go for another name, a different one, one who was not on their list a few days ago, and it could be a surprise for Newcastle,” Romano said.

It will happen

Whether or not Newcastle sign their number one target or their number 10 target, one thing is almost guaranteed, they will sign a centre-back this month.

The Magpies are the richest club in the world, and while some deals aren’t possible, it’s hard to believe they won’t be able to sign at least one central defensive reinforcement.

Of course, they want to get the best possible player, but when you’re staring relegation in the face, often getting a body in is the most important thing.
