When Lucas Leiva bid farewell to hometown club Gremio and joined Liverpool in 2007, he would surely have been dreaming of returning triumphant one day with a multitude of medals around his neck.
It’s unlikely the Brazilian ankle-biter would have expected to come close to the elusive Premier League title on just two occasions during his decade-long stay at Anfield. And, with his contract expiring in the summer, Lucas will have only the 2012 League Cup, won on penalties against Cardiff City, to show for his efforts.
Therefore, you wonder whether this could give Celtic the edge as former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers aims to lure his former player to Glasgow this summer.
The Daily Mail reports that The Hoops are challenging Premier League new-boys Brighton and Hove Albion for the 30-year-old midfielder.
Reunited and it feels so good
However, if Lucas wants to add some silverware to his CV before his ageing limbs catch up with him, Celtic Park is surely the place to go.
After all, Celtic recently cruised to their sixth straight Scottish Premiership title and, with two games to go, are thirty points clear of nearest challengers Aberdeen. They’ve hit triple figures in points and, as it stands, are one goal away from 100 in the league this season.
And with Old Firm rivals Rangers appearing lightyears away from turning this domestic hegemony back into a double act, Celtic will go into next season as absolute, odds on favourites once again. In fact, Rodgers even admitted to the Scottish Sun that the club are aiming for a record-smashing ten league titles in succession.
After failing to lift even one during a decade on Merseyside, you could hardly question Lucas’ motives if he moved north of the border to stock up on silver.
