Aston Villa were reportedly interested in Ollie Watkins before he decided to join Dean Smith at Brentford.
Following the announcement that Dean Smith has left Brentford to become Aston Villa’s new manager, some Bees fans may be concerned that their former boss may be tempted to try and take some of their players with him.
Brentford are currently eight places clear of the Villans in the Championship table, and with Smith likely to be under a fair amount of pressure from the early stages of his tenure, he may feel that bringing in players that he knows that he can trust could be a smart move.
And perhaps one player that it would not be a huge surprise to see Villa target is Ollie Watkins. As reported by Get West London when he completed his move to Brentford, Villa were one of the teams keen on signing the forward and Smith was one of the key reasons for his decision to join the Bees.
Watkins has been an inspired signing for the high-flyers. He scored 10 league goals during his first season at the club and has started this campaign with four goals in 11 appearances. He has also provided six assists in the second tier.
It is a very impressive return for a player who predominantly plays in a wider role. And at the age of 22, Watkins has the potential to get significantly better in the coming years.
He could undoubtedly stand out in a Villa side that already boast a fairly exciting group of wide-men and forwards, so Smith shouldattempt to convince the youngster to follow his lead and also head to the Midlands when the window opens.
Brentford can and will demand big money if another club comes in for Watkins, but that should not put Villa off making a move for one of the most exciting talents in the division.
