Aston Villa may well step up their interest in Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, as it seems that their hopes of signing Tammy Abraham are now over.

The Daily Mirror claim that Frank Lampard wants to keep Abraham at Chelsea and offer him a chance next season when he does take charge, which surely ends Villa’s hopes of landing the striker.

Dean Smith’s side may have to look elsewhere for strike targets, and the Birmingham Mail have suggested that Gayle is on Villa’s radar.

Gayle has proven himself to be one of the most dangerous strikers in the Championship over a number of seasons, but he is yet to really show his quality at the top level.

However, with the Northern Echo suggesting that Newcastle want to sell the striker for £20 million this summer, it could be that Villa turn their attentions to bringing him in.

Gayle would bring finishing prowess and pace to Villa and help relieve some of the goalscoring burden on new signing Wesley Moraes.

Wesley is totally untested in English football, so Villa would be wise to bring in a more experienced forward alongside him.

And it seems that Newcastle man Gayle could be next on their list, with their hopes of signing Abraham now seemingly over.
