The fact that seemingly every club in the Championship, and one or two in the Premier League, are circling around Oxford United winger Marvin Johnson is enough to suggest that he could be worth adding to your list of targets.
According to the Birmingham Mail, Stoke, Derby, Reading, West Brom and Birmingham City are all interested in the 26-year-old while, just a few weeks ago, Wolves and QPR were reported to be tracking his progress.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that Aston Villa are not far away from the discussion. After spending almost £70 million this summer in an attempt to completely revitalise the squad, CEO Keith Wyness told fans to expect a quieter summer this time around. Though it seems Johnson, one of the stars of League One this season, is simply too good to ignore.
He’s certainly too good to let him move to one of your potential rivals unopposed. According to the Birmingham Mail, Villa have scouted Johnson for a number of years although he is something of a later bloomer, only hitting the relative big time with Motherwell in 2015 after spending the early years of his career in non-league.
However, Johnson, whose ability to play on the left side of midfield or wing back will aid Steve Bruce’s formation changes, is clearly ready to make the step up and add extra creativity to a side that has appeared blunt in the final third at times this season.
And it should interest Villa fans to learn that the versatile attacker was once offered a scholarship at city rivals Birmingham while trying to find a route into the professional game, the Birmingham Mail report.
Therefore, Villa could make their near-neighbours pay by offering the local lad a way back home in the summer.
