Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Asmir Begovic from Bournemouth this summer.

Manager of Celtic Neil Lennon walks on the pitch before the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Aberdeen and Celtic at Pittodrie Stadium on May 04, 2019 in Aberdeen, Scotland.

While it is arguably not an area that provides a major concern, it is little surprise that Neil Lennon appears to have one eye on strengthening Celtic’s goalkeeper options this summer.

Scott Bain made some uncharacteristic errors towards the end of this past season, and Craig Gordon seems to be coming towards the end of his career. Not replacing Bain may not hurt the Hoops next term, but looking out for a potential upgrade still makes a lot of sense.

And the man that Lennon appears to be keen on is Asmir Begovic, with the Daily Star reporting at the weekend that the Bournemouth stopper finds himself on Celtic’s shopping list.

Begovic has endured a difficult time at the Vitality Stadium, but he has made almost 250 Premier League appearances during his career and his peak years may still be ahead of him.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international – who cost the Cherries £10 million (via The Sun) – spent much of this past campaign as first-choice, but was demoted down to the bench and ended the season out of the matchday squad altogether as Eddie Howe handed youngster Mark Travers his chance to impress.

With Travers still developing and Artur Boruc heading into the summer with his contract expiring, it appeared that there was still a good chance that Begovic would find himself back in the fold from next season.

But perhaps, it is former Bhoys stopper Boruc that may have helped his old club in their pursuit of the 32-year-old, with the Daily Mail reporting at the start of the month that he has agreed a new one-year deal.

With Boruc ahead of Begovic in the pecking order at the end of this past season and since signing a new deal, it does appear that the latter is much more likely to start the campaign out of the team than the Pole, who spent five seasons at Parkhead.

So if Celtic do manage to land Begovic this summer, perhaps it may be the club’s former goalkeeper who helped opened the door for Lennon’s men to make their move.
