Manchester United start their EFL Cup campaign with a home match against Burton Albion on Wednesday evening and manager Jose Mourinho is likely to make plenty of changes.

While United’s first-team squad is such that many household names will come back into the fold, there could be some relatively unfamiliar faces on the bench, so what chance Angel Gomes making a reappearance?

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder is widely regarded as one of United’s most exciting academy talents in recent years and a place in Wednesday’s match day squad is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.

Mourinho picked him for last season’s league game against Crystal Palace and he went on to become United’s youngest ever Premier League player when he came on with just two minutes remaining.

This season he has continued to impress, scoring one and setting up another in a 4-1 UEFA Youth League victory against Basel last week, and if he is named among the substitutes he will no doubt be buzzing for his second appearance at Old Trafford.

United do not rush their young prospects and Gomes will have plenty of time to develop at his own pace. However, he will have seen Marcus Rashford burst onto the scene and never leave, and if he does appear against Burton and plays to his full potential, the teenager could show everyone what all the fuss is about.
