Newcastle United attempted to sign Andros Townsend in the summer, but he may now be about to sign a new Crystal Palace contract.

It is no secret that Newcastle’s summer did not go to plan in Rafa Benitez’s eyes, with plenty of their reported targets seemingly getting nowhere near an actual move to St James’ Park.

The frustration from the underwhelming window will not have evaporated during the opening weeks of the season either, with the Magpies currently in the relegation zone after five games of the new campaign, with one point coming from those fixtures.

And it appears that there may be a chance that Benitez’s discontent could increase this weekend, as Newcastle travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace and face one of those summer targets who did not end up moving to Tyneside.

The Sunday Mirror (16/09; page 70) reported at the weekend that Newcastle tried to sign Andros Townsend from the Eagles during the most recent window two years after selling him to Palace in the wake of their relegation.

Not only did Palace hold onto the winger, but the Sunday Mirror’s report suggested that they are now hoping to agree a new contract with Townsend in the hope of ending any talk of a future move switch to Newcastle.

And he may be hoping to prove that Newcastle should have tried even harder to bring him back to the club in the summer this weekend. Townsend has made a decent start to the new season, but is yet to provide a goal or assist in the top flight.

Another poor result will be extremely difficult for Benitez to take, but if it is one of his summer targets who adds to Newcastle’s woes, then perhaps he could be forgiven for finally letting any frustration boil over.
