Manager Lee Johnson says Bristol City could be in the market for a right-back this winter and Aston Villa have one he knows well

Lee Johnson, manager of Bristol City looks on before the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Bristol City at Craven Cottage on October 31, 2017 in London, England.

Could an Aston Villa player feature on Lee Johnson’s January wishlist at Bristol City?

The Robins boss has admitted he could look to loan in a right-back when the transfer window reopens [Bristol Post], and Villa have one who is well known to Johnson.

James Bree became a regular under the 36-year-old at Barnsley, but finds himself way down the pecking order at Villa Park.

Summer signing Ahmed Elmohamady, fit again Ritchie de Laet and auxiliary left-back Alan Hutton are all ahead of Bree at present, less than a year since his £3 million move from Oakwell.

So could a reunion be on the cards? For starters, it would perhaps rely on Bristol City finding a temporary home for Zak Vyner, while Villa may be reluctant to help out a rival for promotion – with the Robins currently two places and four points better off than Steve Bruce’s side.

But if there is a vacancy at Ashton Gate, it would be little surprise if Bree was sought to fill it.
