The West Bromwich Albion target has also been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City.

According to a recent report from the Express, West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon player William Carvalho this summer, but Sport Mediaset claim that both Arsenal and Manchester City are also keen on the holding midfielder.

So could the Baggies pull off the previously unthinkable and seal a deal for the player despite interest from two of the top flight’s biggest spenders?

While some will believe there is no way William will turn down a move to the Gunners or the Blues for a spell at The Hawthorns, West Brom manager Tony Pulis may not be fighting a losing battle if he can convince the 25-year-old that his career would be best served with a move to the Midlands.

After all, West Brom have excelled this season and they have the money to back up their ambitions.

They can also offer William first-team football week in, week out from the outset and give him the chance to become a superstar at The Hawthorns.

It would take an almighty charm offensive from Pulis to convince William to ignore the likes of Arsenal and City, but given the club’s progress under the 59-year-old it is no longer impossible.

Time will tell if West Brom can seal a deal for one of the most effective defensive midfielders in Europe, potentially closing the gap on the top six in the process.
