The Tottenham Hotspur forward has been linked with a return to his former club.
According to a recent report from Turkish publication Fanatik, AZ Alkmaar are interested in bringing Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen back to the Netherlands and, for once, a club could be about to get the better of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
The Tottenham supremo is renowned for getting the better end of practically every deal he negotiates but, with Janssen seemingly having no future in North London after his initial struggles and subsequent loan exit, Alkmaar will know they could hold more sway than most when it comes to Spurs transfers.
As reported by the BBC, Tottenham signed Janssen for £17million in 2016, but the prospect of Spurs recouping that fee now looks slim.
At the time of his arrival, the Netherlands international was one of Europe’s hottest prospects, with 32 goals in just 49 appearances for Alkmaar and a blossoming reputation for the national side.
Fast-forward two years and Janssen has managed only six goals in 39 games for Tottenham and five in 17 during a loan spell at Fenerbahce.
While there are two years remaining on his Tottenham contract, Levy will know that he can only get so much for a player whose star has waned almost from the moment he arrived in England.
Given the loan fee Levy managed to extract from Fenerbahce for Janssen’s stint in Turkey, Tottenham may not be out of pocket if and when the 23-year-old does leave for good. However Alkmaar may yet secure a profit if they can sign him for less than the £17million Spurs paid.
And in time, there is every chance Janssen could rediscover his best form at a club that seems tailor-made for his talents.
