Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly not in negotiation with Manchester United about the proposed transfer of Toby Alderweireld.
Alderweireld is expected to leave Spurs this summer after contract talks broke down, with the club only prepared to offer £130,000-a-week while the defender wanted £180,000-a-week.
The Belgium international’s current deal expires in 2019 and, while there is the option to extend that by a further year, doing so would also activate a £25m release clause for a player who, according to the Daily Star, is valued by Tottenham at £75million.
However, the Red Devils believe £55million is a fairer price for someone about to enter the final year of their contract and who will turn 30 next season.
Could he stay?
While initial talks were held with United last month about the possibility of Alderweireld moving to Old Trafford, there have been no further discussions or developments. Paris Saint-Germain are also interested.
Despite an injury-ravaged campaign in 2017/18 the 29-year-old was named in the PFA team of the year the previous term and is widely considered one of the best centre-backs in the top flight of English football.
So while it initially seemed Alderweireld would almost certainly leave North London, could there now be a way back for the Belgian under manager Mauricio Pochettino? Especially as football.london also reports the wage structure will be significantly increased by chairman Daniel Levy, so perhaps a new contract could be negotiated after all?
