The Aston Villa defender has looked resurgent since stepping in at left-back.

When Neil Taylor was banned for three matches, Aston Villa fans were quick to worry about who would replace him in the starting XI.

After all, the Welsh international had kicked off all Villa’s league matches prior to his late dismissal against Bolton Wanderers, and there was no ready-made replacement at the club.

As a result – and much to the chagrin of some Villa fans – Alan Hutton started in the relatively unfamiliar position against Wolverhampton Wanders, only to leave the field as one of the few impressive performers on the day.

Hutton followed that up with another fine showing at left-back, this time against Fulham, and with one more match before Taylor returns the Scotland international could make it a hat-trick of impressive showings, potentially giving Villa boss Steve Bruce a headache in the process.

Just a few weeks ago it would have been impossible to think that Taylor would struggle to get back into Villa’s starting XI, but the case for Hutton deserves to be heard.

The much-maligned Villa player looked to be on his way out of the club, however he has done well since the international break, looking like he has played at left-back for years.

He has one last chance to prove his worth before Taylor returns, this time in the huge clash against Birmingham City next weekend, and if he does well his teammate may face the very real prospect of waiting a little longer for his return.
