The Aston Villa forward is currently recovering from injury.

Gabriel Agbonlahor of Aston Villa celebrates during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Birmingham City at Villa Park on April 23, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

Aston Villa may have lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday prior to the latest international break, but Steve Bruce’s side are still well placed to mount a serious promotion push in the second half of the season. So what chance a returning star playing a significant role when every point becomes more vital than ever?

Gabby Agbonlahor is currently side-lined through injury, but he is expected to return from his calf problem sooner rather than later and that could be a timely boost for a Villa side that cannot call on John Terry for up to 12 weeks.

The Villa skipper has been brilliant at the back, forming an impressive partnership with James Chester, and his absence will be a bitter blow to a side currently sitting sixth in the Championship table.

However Agbonlahor’s experience and leadership skills could lessen the blow of Terry’s absence, even if Villa need to find a suitable replacement at the back, with Chris Samba the most likely short-term candidate.

As well as Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia have played this season, the latter has looked out of sorts recently and the availability of Agbonlahor could ensure Villa rest the target man without losing their attacking thrust.

With the games coming thick and fast over the Christmas and New Year period, a player like Agbonlahor could be vital to Villa’s cause, even if he is approaching the twilight of his career.
