Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers side have struggled for goals this season.

While it is the situation surrounding a certain midfielder that will be taking up much of Mark Warburton’s time currently, it is arguably Rangers’ issues up front that he needs to be concerned about.

After eight games in the Scottish Premiership, the Light Blues have scored just 10 times. That number is the same amount that right-back James Tavernier managed in the whole of the last campaign in the league.

Martyn Waghorn – who scored 20 league goals last term – has just one league strike, while the Gers’ joint top scorers this time around, Andy Halliday, Harry Forrester and Kenny Miller, have just two goals each.

While the side’s recent upturn in performances suggest that those tallies will improve in the coming weeks, Warburton may still want to consider looking to add some extra depth going forward in January.

The Daily Mail reports that former Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty looks destined to leave Norwich City in the winter after struggling to force his way into Alex Neil’s plans, and it may make sense for Warburton to offer the 29-year-old the chance to come back to Ibrox, even on a short-term basis.

Lafferty has recently spoken of his desire to return and of his regret at how his first spell ended (via The Scotsman), and while the fans may initially be unhappy about the idea of the Northern Irishman coming back, it may be a deal that suits both parties.

A permanent deal may be too much of a gamble given his lack of first-team football in recent years, but a loan may be ideal as Rangers will not have to worry too much if it does not work out and Lafferty will know that he will have to hit the ground running.

Since Warburton’s arrival, the best signings he has made have turned out to be the ones who have come to Rangers with a point to prove.

And with Lafferty struggling at Carrow Road and facing an uphill battle to win supporters over, he certainly has that. But he clearly also the desire to make things right if his recent comments are anything to go by.

Perhaps, it is time that Rangers gave him the chance to do just that.
