Glasgow Rangers are reportedly hoping to bring Steven Davis back to Ibrox in January.

It appeared that one of the most likely deals that Rangers were going to get done in January was the move to bring Steven Davis back to Ibrox.

The Scottish Sun recently reported that Southampton are ready to let Davis leave St Mary’s ahead of the end of his contract in the summer and Rangers were keen to re-sign their former captain.

With Ralph Hasenhuttl not using him in either of his first two games in charge, it did appear that a January deal with the Gers would have few hurdles to clear.

However, perhaps reports regarding the future of one of his teammates could thrown a late spanner in the works.

The Sun has reported this week that Paris Saint-Germain are plotting a £30 million bid for Mario Lemina next month.

Should Lemina leave, keeping Davis for the rest of his contract seems like it could be a sensible option. He is not a replacement for the Gabon international, but his consistency makes him the kind of player that Hasenhuttl would be wise to keep hold of until the summer when it would be easier to spend the Lemina money wisely.

It seems highly unlikely at this stage that Davis will be offered a new deal at St Mary’s, so it perhaps would be fair to assume that Rangers will get their man sooner or later.

But perhaps the uncertainty surrounding Lemina could tempt Hasenhuttl to delay Davis’ potential Ibrox move for the time-being.
