Danny Murphy said on Match of the Day on BBC One (10:59pm, December 5, 2020) that Leeds United winger Ian Poveda should have gone down for a penalty against Chelsea.
During the second half when Leeds were 2-1 down, Poveda was caught by Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell inside the area.
Instead of going down, the 20-year-old stayed on his feet and eventually took the shot, which did not result in a goal.
Leeds went on to lose the Premier League game 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, and after the match, former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Murphy said that the England Under-20 international winger should have gone down and got a penalty for his side.
Murphy said about Poveda on Match of the Day on BBC One (10:59pm, December 5, 2020): “I agree (with Tim Cahill, who praised Poveda for not going down), but some people will say he’s stupid. He cost his team a point because he knows if he goes down, it’s a definite penalty at the moment with the rules being the way they are.”
Ian Poveda should be lauded
While Murphy is probably right and if Poveda had gone down, then no one would have blamed him, but it is laudable that the youngster decided to stay on his feet.
It is very encouraging that the youngster was determined to score despite having the easier option of going to the ground and potentially earning a spot kick for Leeds.
