Chris Hughton has stated that the actions of Robert Sanchez during Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Brighton on Saturday was the ‘correct action’ from the player, as he told Premier League Productions (12/03/22 at 1:25 pm).
When Luis Diaz headed Liverpool ahead at the Amex, Sanchez raced off his line to try and clear the ball, but instead, he ended up taking the Liverpool forward out.
The Brighton shot-stopper completely missed the ball and produced something you would see in a WWE ring.
Despite the reckless nature of Sanchez’s challenge, no red card was awarded to the disbelief of those in Liverpool colours.
But former Brighton boss Hughton, whilst he agreed there wouldn’t have been any complaints if a red was shown straight away, was adamant that Sanchez’s actions were ‘correct’.
“I think the action by the goalkeeper is the correct action,” said Hughton. “We are watching it in slow motion. He catches it, no doubt.
“I think if he gives a red card, then there aren’t too many complaints. The argument was that it should have been a yellow card.
“But I do think the action from the goalkeeper is the correct action.”
The so-called bigger side, and Liverpool especially, have always been accused of VAR favouring them.
To put it in a blunt manner, if Alisson Becker had done what Sanchez did yesterday, and got away with it, then there would have been uproar.
Sanchez simply wasn’t in control of himself and he allowed his aggressive natured approach to act like he was going to knock Diaz’s head off.
Anywhere else on the field, never mind VAR, the on-field referee is putting his hand in his back pocket and showcasing a straight red.
