Newcastle United secured a huge three points on the road as the Magpies claimed a 1-0 win against Premier League rivals Leeds United.

Jonjo Shelvey’s 20-yard free-kick 75 minutes in saw the northeast side win only their second game this season in what could be a massive result for Newcastle this season.

The three points put Newcastle just one point off from safety in the Premier League standings, with Leeds now looking over their shoulder following wins this matchweek from the Toon and Norwich City.

It was one of Newcastle’s best performances of the season, with the likes of Joe Willock and Ryan Fraser winning plaudits from fans on social media for their display against Leeds.

However, it was Fabian Schar who stole the plaudits on social media, with the Swiss international keeping a clean sheet and marshalling the defence well alongside Jamaal Lascelles.

The centre-back, who the Sun report is a target for Ligue 1 side Bordeaux this January and could be the subject of a move, has been one of Newcastle’s more reliable performers over the years.

And yesterday at Elland Road, Newcastle fans saw what Schar can do when in the right system, with the defender one of the best players on the pitch against Leeds.

The win against Leeds could be the catalyst that kicks Newcastle’s season off with more January signings expected to come. And for fans on social media, Schar was the Man of the Match in Yorkshire.
