Garth Crooks has praised Liverpool central defender Joe Gomez on BBC Sport for his performance against Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League at the weekend.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward has included Gomez in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week for his performance for Liverpool against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The match between the Toffees and the Reds ended in a goalless draw.

Gomez, who cost Liverpool £3.5 million in transfer fees in 2015 (BBC Sport), started at the back alongside Virgil van Dijk.

BBC pundit Crooks has also pointed out that Van Dijk is not at his best at the moment.

Garth Crooks on Joe Gomez for Liverpool v Everton

Crooks wrote: “It’s good to see Gomez back in the Liverpool starting line up again. The player has suffered some horrendous injuries but has found the strength and shown the courage to come back from them.

“His selection against Newcastle in midweek was telling, while his performance against Everton was composed in the white-hot heart of Goodison Park.

“Van Dijk is not at his best at the moment and Klopp needs a cool head, and someone he can trust alongside the Dutchman and help him out until he gets his form back. Liverpool couldn’t get past Pickford, so a Liverpool clean sheet was the best they could hope for and Gomez was very much part of that effort.”

Important player for Liverpool

In our view, Joe Gomez is an important player for Liverpool who could play a massive role for the Reds in the coming weeks and months.

The 25-year-old is not guaranteed a place in the Liverpool starting lineup and has to fight for his spot, but he is doing well at the moment and has risen to the occasion.

Liverpool are not at their very best at the moment, with Van Dijk not looking the world-class player that he is.

Gomez will be determined to do well for the Reds, and that hunger and will could only make Liverpool a better and stronger team.
