The Chelsea hitman would be an excellent addition to either Everton or Liverpool’s squads.

Joey Barton is renowned for his controversial views on the game, and his latest opinion regarding the future of Diego Costa will do little to dispel that notion, after he told talkSPORT that both Merseyside clubs should go all out to sign the Chelsea man.

The 28-year-old striker will almost certainly leave Stamford Bridge this summer, after being deemed surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte, and refusing to train with the youth team squad.

The Spain international still has so much to offer at the very highest level though, and will surely be a huge asset to whichever club wins the race for his signature.

Costa has been superb for the west London outfit, since joining the Blues from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014, scoring 52 goals in 89 Premier League outings for his club.

And Barton told talkSPORT how Everton and Liverpool should make the signing of the Chelsea man their priority this summer:

“If I’m Liverpool or Everton I’m doing everything I can to sign Diego Costa. I’m coming in now to Chelsea saying ‘look, you’re clearly prepared to do it having sold [Nemanja] Matic to a title rival in Man United’. Liverpool are crying out for a forward of Costa’s ilk and so are Everton. If they want to get into that top four consistently and do well in the Champions League – Everton in the Europa League – you could do a lot worse than Diego Costa. He (Costa) knows the model – he’s done it consistently over the last few years. If I was Ronald Koeman or Jürgen Klopp I’d be on the phone to Chelsea trying to get that done.”

Although Chelsea have already sold one of their key men to a direct rival, should they allow Costa to join either of the Merseyside clubs, it would send shockwaves through the footballing world.

Football is a funny old game though, and stranger things have happened, that’s for sure.
