Andros Townsend has said that he wants Ryan Mason to become Tottenham Hotspur’s next permanent manager on the ITV Football Podcast.
Mason has won his first two Premier League games in charge of Tottenham, with the North London side clearly trying to play more on the front foot.
Mason did receive some criticism from sections of Spurs’ support, when they were heavily beaten in the League Cup final by Manchester City.
But Townsend insists that he saw what Mason was trying to do in that game at Wembley.
And the former Tottenham winger believes that the 29-year-old should be considered for a permanent role, with the club seemingly struggling to land their first choice options.
He said: “I’m going to say something controversial here, you’re probably going to disagree with me. If they could have got Nagelsmann or the Ajax manager fair enough, but if you can’t get your top targets, why not give Ryan Mason an extended run next season?
“Spurs got so much criticism against Manchester City, but I saw a side who were trying to change the way. They were looking to get the ball out from the back, keep possession and not just counter attack.
“You’ll probably say I’m biased because he’s my mate. Why would it be a gamble? If Spurs win the last five games, if you can’t get your first couple of managers why would you spend £10 million getting another manager out of his job which is also a gamble?”
If Tottenham were appoint Mason it would come as a real shock, given his lack of experience at the top level.

Reliable Tottenham journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed on Youtube that Mason’s training sessions are going down very well with the players though.
If Mason can win the remaining four Premier League games and guide Spurs into the Champions League then his stock definitely will rise.
But the Athletic currently say that Tottenham’s plan is just to keep him as part of the next permanent manager’s backroom staff.
