Speaking to Off The Ball, John Giles has drawn comparisons between Thiago Alcantara and Graeme Souness.

Souness may be best known these days as a Sky Sports pundit, but fans of a certain generation will remember him as one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Indeed, the Scot was an absolute star for Liverpool back in the day. He was the complete midfielder and he could take any game by the scruff of the neck.

According to Giles, Liverpool could do with another player like Souness, but he also says that Thiago is the nearest thing he’s seen to Souness in recent times.

What’s been said?

Giles spoke about Thiago and Souness.

“In midfield they could do with someone like Graeme Souness, he was a great player, he could get a grip of any game and control the midfield. I don’t think Liverpool have anyone like that. Thiago has been the nearest to it in recent times, but if you look at him over the weekend, I’ve never seen Souness play in the way Thiago did in that first-half when you need to get a grip of a game, I don’t think they have anyone who can really do that,” Giles said.

Consistency

Thiago is an exceptional footballer, but as Giles says, he can have off-days as we saw against Villarreal this week.

Last season the Spaniard underperformed, and while he’s been utterly mesmeric in recent months, he does need to be more consistent before we speak about him alongside the likes of Souness for Liverpool.

One thing is for sure though, when he’s on it, he can grab any match by the horns, and when he does that, Liverpool are almost always guaranteed a victory.

Thiago is a world-class talent, and Liverpool are very lucky to have him in their squad.
