‘Contract offered’: Journalist says Spurs trying to keep youngster, but three clubs want him

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has been discussing the pathway for academy players to break into the Spurs first team and Nile John.

Tottenham Hotspur have some of the best facilities in the world when it comes to training and developing players, but for some reason, they’re not producing elite talents at the same rate as some of their closest rivals.

Chelsea and Arsenal have been making great use of their academies in recent years, while even the likes of Fulham and West Ham are outshining Spurs when it comes to bringing young players through over the past five or six years.

The key problem is that Spurs aren’t handing out chances, and that’s led to them losing some brilliant prospects such as Marcus Edwards and Noni Madueke, and there could soon be another player to add to that list.

Indeed, according to Gold, Nile John is wanted by Brighton, Basel and Cercle Brugge, but Spurs are keen to keep hold of the 19-year-old, offering him a new contract.

John’s future

The reporter discussed the teenager’s future.

“With Spurs, maybe the managers will say it’s down to the quality coming through, but that hasn’t always been the case. Look at someone like Marcus Edwards, Noni Madueke who is at PSV. Nile John is another one, he has interest from Brighton and a couple of clubs in Europe as well with Basel and Cercle Brugge. His contract is coming to an end, but it’s whether he accepts a new contract or not. I think there has been a contract offered, but he might not because does he get through?” Gold said.

Best off leaving

As much as staying and earning a spot in the Spurs team is alluring, John may be best off leaving the club at this point.

As John enters his 20s, he needs to be playing regular football, and he’s not likely to get that chance at Spurs anytime soon as they look to focus on the here-and-now as they chase a top four spot.

Meanwhile, Brighton have been more than happy to bed-in young talents in recent years such as Moises Caicedo and Tariq Lamptey, so perhaps a move to the south coast could be his best bet right now.
